St Edith Stein is also known as St Benedicta of the Cross. She was born in  October 1891 in Poland and was a Jew. She later became a Catholic inspired by the life of St Teresa of Avila. She trained as a nurse but also joined the Carmelite order. During World War II she moved to live in the Netherlands to avoid persecution. She was arrested and sent to Auschwitz where she died.

In 1998 she was made a Saint and is one of the Patron Saints of Europe. She is known for suggesting ways in which personal qualities could be developing through education, in particular the importance of:

  • Subjects that support emotional development, eg history, art, music and literature.
  • A well rounded intellect and education.
  • Learning through practical and concrete tasks, especially for girls and women.
  • Religious education

When St Pope John Paul II canonised her he said to the young people gathered in St Peter's

"Your life is not an endless series of open doors! Listen to your heart! Do not stay on the surface but go to the heart of things! And when the time is right, have the courage to decide! The Lord is waiting for you to put your freedom in his good hands."

Edith Stein is an example for all who are engaged in education be that students, staff or governors.
