7th July, 2010.

Dear Parents,

SPORTS REPORT:  this weeks’ report by Mrs. Timmons could practically have its own newsletter as National Schools Sports Week 28 June - 2 July 2010 is probably the busiest sporting week ever! As well as our usual PE, games, swimming and gymnastics lessons the children had lots of other exciting sporting opportunities:

“Monday -  girls football training; Tuesday - 6 athletes from CC joined with others in representing Portsmouth at the Hampshire athletics championships in Southampton; the mixed cricket team played another league game; on Wednesday all yr 1/2 children took part in multi skills activities delivered by a coach from Portsmouth Sports Partnership; 10 yr 1/2 children took part in a racket skills festival at Priory Tennis centre finishing 3rd; on Thursday 14 children from yr 1/2 tri golf club travelled to Portsmouth Golf Centre to test their putting and chipping skills against 7 other schools in a fun event, finishing 3rd with everybody given a colourful t-shirt and medal; on Friday a mixed teams of athletes from Y3/4 and 5/6 competed in the South East Hants primary schools athletics championships at the MBC, where we won 9 individual medals and the yr 3/4 girls team  won a lovely trophy for finishing in 1st place - overall our school finished in 3rd place out of 12 team, our best ever performance at this event. Well done to everybody who participated in National School Sports week - I hope you have managed to achieve your sporting pledge or promise. A massive BIG thank you to our wonderful army of enthusiastic and noisy supporters!”

I have included this long report as I am so proud of our sporting achievements, especially considering we have such a limited site. Governors have committed to promoting sport in Corpus Christi, and our children have more than taken up every individual challenge.  I am proud and delighted.

CREATIVITY:  OrangeApples worked with Y3/4 on plays about the wives of Henry VIII, which will be filmed for use as a teaching resource - they have also run art workshops to make costumes and props.

BIG SING LITURGY: A lovely event held at the Cathedral for our Y6 pupils. This included inspirational singing with a chance to reflect on a spiritual message.  Thank you to St. Edmunds for organising this.

CLASS EXCHANGE: Our children have now met their new teacher, and we have managed to place every child with at least one of the friends who they requested.  Can I remind parents that although children have base classes, they are likely to be with another teacher in the phase for Maths, as we set this subject.

SCIENCE:  Thank you to Claire Tomlinson, one of our governors, who also works in Science Education in a secondary school.  Claire came in on Friday to do some very messy Science experiments in Y6. When I asked the children what they had done, they were full of enthusiasm, but warned me  “…don’t go in the back playground!”  So of course, I did… it looked like a snowstorm had hit us in July!  Many thanks to Claire for giving our oldest pupils an exciting taster of the fun of secondary science.

SAFEGUARDING:  Thank you to all parents and carers for observing our safeguarding procedures at the beginning and end of school day.  I would never want to discourage parents from seeing teachers, it is part of our open door policy, but please make sure you sign in the office.

CHERNOBYL CHILDREN: A message from Mrs. Edmonds: ‘Thank you to all who gave so generously to this appeal.  We had so many bags of lovely clothes, many of them new, which we distributed.  The children had a wonderful time here, and your kindness has contributed to this. Many thanks for this.’

"AHOY ME HEARTIES!!!"  Reception are looking forward to a fun filled dress-up day tomorrow (Thursday 8th July).  Please send your child to school in either a pirate or mermaid costume.  They will be taking part in lots of exciting learning opportunities including a treasure hunt, map reading competition and pirate and mermaid songs and games.  See you then Shipmates!!!

PTA:  YEAR 5/6 DISCO last year’s Leavers’ Disco was so successful that we have decided to repeat it this year. It will be for Year 5/6 children only and will be held in 3/4 AL.  This is a 'children only' event and will be supervised by school staff.  It will be held on Friday 16th July from 6.30 – 8.30 p.m.  There will, as usual, be a BBQ and tuck shop available.  Tickets, costing £1.50 for both year groups, will be available from Mrs O’Doherty from Thursday 8th July.

SPORTS DAY – We are still looking for volunteers to help give drinks to the children at Sports Day which will be held on the morning of Wednesday 21st July at the Mountbatten Centre.  If you can help, please leave your name in the office.

JAR TOMBOLA – as a change to the end of term raffle we would like to hold a Jar Tombola.  We are therefore asking for donations of small, clear, clean jars filled with sweets, marbles, pennies, small toys etc. which can be used as prizes.  Assuming we get enough jars, the tombola will be held on Tuesday 20th July at 3.15 p.m. and will continue on Wednesday if we have prizes left over.

PUPIL OSCARS 2009/10: Congratulations to Ellen McGill, Beau Rimmer, Niamh Wilkinson, Mellissa Moynihan and Tammy Mayer who have been selected by the pupils from the school to be nominated for an Oscar at this year’s award evening.  They have had special invites to be special VIP guests and attend a celebration evening at Portsmouth Guildhall on Monday.  Good luck.

MISS SAHOTA:  Our Assistant head, Miss Sahota, is to be married this week.  We wish her and her future husband Harpal, all the very best for the future.

Yours sincerely

Mrs. E Giltinan
