Introduction to our Library

At Corpus Christi we have built a library environment and have resources which enrich pupils’ reading experiences, foster a love of books and develop pupils’ skills as independent learners.

Research suggests that pupils who read for pleasure are more likely to achieve at school and we have shown that our school is committed to the promotion and development of reading by becoming a Reading Connects school.  This means that we are part of a countrywide initiative to get the whole school reading.

At our school we like to encourage sharing books as early as possible.  All our pupils have a scheduled library session each week with their class.  In addition to this the library is open at published times for book exchanges.  We run a very successful and enjoyable library club and are developing a library committee and programme of pupil library helpers.

At Reception and Key Stage One pupils are able to select one book to take home and share with family.  It is suggested that this be returned the following week to enable another book to be taken out.  In Key Stage Two pupils are able to select two books, one book which is within their reading range and another book which is of their own choice.  We listen to our pupils read on a regular basis and they are given attainment levels which correspond to the levels of fiction books available within our library.

We encourage the return of books on a regular basis and ask that pupils take care of them to ensure they have a long shelf life.

Our resources are carefully chosen to ensure they are appropriate for the school taking into consideration the presentation style, appeal of the book content, currency of information and appropriate levels.

We also have a computerised library system which allows for careful monitoring of our library resources.  This system includes a fingertip recognition system allowing children to use the system independently.

If you would like to take part in our school reading initiative please let us know, we would value your input.

Ask your child’s class teacher or the librarian if you require any further information about our library.
